Any exercise motion or position that strains or stresses the spine or joints of the body should be avoided.
Three exercises or actions to avoid are: Squats / Dead-Lifts / High-Impact Jumping
Squats using weights can be a potential back injury waiting to happen. Performing a squat with no weight is usually no problem. When you place a barbell across your shoulders with a substantial amount of weight, you risk injury to your back as well as your knees.
Dead-Lifts can also create low back problems when the lifted weight is excessive. The general idea of this exercise is beneficial; the problem arises when the lifted weight is excessive. Both the squat and dead-lift can be performed using a set of dumbbells, therefore reducing the pressure on your spine. My suggestion is not to exceed 50% of your body weight when performing either of these lifts. Good form with higher repetitions will give you the desired results.
High-Impact Jumping can create a problem for your back and your knees. Jumping repeatedly off a platform can be a potentially harmful activity. Spinal compression can cause your discs to bulge or to herniate, creating a very painful condition which requires professional care.
I am available to evaluate your exercise program and to offer my suggestions on how to exercise safely.
Exercise should be fun – not painful!
